Rachel is a stay-at-home mum of one, and the blogger behind Mummy Glitzer: a blog that charts her family life with all its ups and downs.
First Impressions
Love the header and the soft colours that work really well against the abundant white space. All this white also gives your blog a clean and clutter-free look that is immediately inviting to the eye, making us want to dive in and find out more.
Header and Menu Bar
Your header is gorgeous and gives your blog a really fresh feel. However, your blog title ‘Mummy Glitzer’ is a little difficult to read so it might be worth considering a different font. Aside from readability, a more rounded, softer font might complement the overall look and feel better.
Aesthetically, your Menu Bar is also a little difficult to see clearly — perhaps a darker grey and a larger font would work better?
In terms of the Menu buttons we would suggest separating the ‘About me’ page and the Contact page. You mention on your About page that you are happy to do reviews and sponsored posts. So we would suggest a tab leading to a page with your contact details, and a little bit about how you can work with PRs and what you can offer them.
Also consider moving ‘Blogs I love’ to the Sidebar. The main Menu bar should always focus on the most important information for your target audience (readers, PRs etc).
‘The Blog’ tab leads to a page where it seems people can leave thoughts on your blog. However, this isn’t too clear as there is no explanation on that page. Our suggestion would be to remove this tab and invite people to leave thoughts on your About page.
It would also be helpful to offer a few lines of explanation on the ‘Parent Bloggers Database’ page (what the database is for, why you’re doing it etc.) as at the moment it’s a little unclear.
TOP TIP: Consider a different font for ‘Mummy Glitzer’ as the current font is a little difficult to read. Re-evaluate your main menu bar so that content relevant to your target audience is immediately visible.
Sidebar
It’s great that you have your social media buttons up there and they look really pretty and distinctive. Have you thought about bringing your ‘Subscribe to this blog’ button further up? You could also display your main categories here or even your blog roll, rather than your Twitter feed. We are not huge fans of having a Twitter feed in the Sidebar as it takes up a lot of prime real estate and does not add much value for your readers.
Also the TOTS 100 bar needs reformatting as it looks a little squashed!
TOP TIP: Remove the Twitter feed, display your main categories and streamline the rest of your sidebar.
Main Content
There is an openness to your writing that is inviting and refreshing.
Your blog is primarily about your life as a mother which is great as it’s unique to you. You also include posts on a range of topics and we wondered whether you had considered narrowing this down a little, to really define your niche? For example, you are clearly interested in health and social issues — perhaps this could be a secondary aspect of your blog, but with a focus on health and social issues affecting mums and kids across the globe?
The review posts that we saw were spot on as they were all very relevant to your blog content and audience. However, some of your sponsored posts appear a little off topic so this is something to consider evaluating going forward.
TOP TIP: Consider defining your niche more clearly and being more selective with the topics you post about.
